Samari (1453m) is the northeastern-most massif of Vourinos, whose northern foot forms the southern side of the Bara Pass, near Siatista Kozanis. The limestone massif of Samari forms the impressive valley of Mesiano Nero which leads to the refuge.
The valley of Mesiano Nero, part of the Grevena - Kozani Geopark, is the location of a collision between the limestone of the European plate with Peridotite from the Tethys Ocean about 170 million years ago.
Near the place Tsouka and at the base of Psili Rachi (1399m) is the small sport climbing crag of Bara with four bolted routes graded from 5a+ up to 6b+ and a height of 10m. With a northwesterly orientation and at an altitude of 800m it offers ideal climbing conditions during the warm months.
Access
Samari is situated between Siatista and Metamorfosi at the edge of the Kozani prefecture and is mainly accessible from the north via Egnatia Odos. To approach the crag, we exit Egnatia Odos at Bara and follow the road for Vari until the turn-off for the refuge, onto which we continue for 1Km. Parking at the base of the rocky slope to our left, we hike for 10 minutes towards the rock-band above.
