Mountaki (1690m) is a forested peak on the eastern side of Vermio which, as it descends towards Naoussa, forms two lower sub-peaks, Ntaveli Peak (1460m) and Fengari (1332m).
Ntaveli Peak and Fengari have an imposing headwall, a variety of towers, as well as a ridge, while the hiking trail to them is considered one of the most demanding on Vermio. Four (4) traditional climbing routes have been recorded with difficulties ranging from III to IV+ and a maximum height of 270m. The quality of the rock is unknown.
Access
Access to the crags is achieved via the area of Agios Nikolaos military base within Makrolakkos valley, about 3Km from the center of Naousa. From there, following the path to the southwest, it is possible to reach the base of the Fengari headwall. Alternatively, access can also be made from the western path that leads to Mountaki peak and from there by descending to the east.
Climbing history
The first route recorded on Ntaveli (1460m) was the “Northwest ridge” (IV, 230m) in March 1966 by I. Pantoulas - O. Ioannidis who, with the contribution of V. Georgiadis and A. Spanoudis, would complete another two routes on the Fengari headwall that same month.
In May 1969 unknown members of EOS Thessalonikis would go on to climb the “Towers of the Moon” (III, 270m), following the natural line of towers on the south ridge of Fengari.
