Vardousia - Chomiriani (Megali Chouni)

Megalo Zastano on the western face of Chomiriani.

Chomiriani or Megali Chouni (2294m) is the northernmost massif of Vardousia and it is situated north of Korakas (2495m) and east of Gidovouni (2080m). Alongside Gidovouni it forms a deep valley, within which the shepherding huts of Skasmenis Strougka may be found and through which the road connecting Athanasios Diakos to Artotina passes. Chomiriani offers only one interesting face, on the west aspect, which is named Megalo Zastano.

On Megalo Zastano there are three established routes, only one of which is a summer rock climb. The routes vary in difficulty from 45ο (F+) up to V+, and have a medium heigh up to 300m, but their topos are not known with precision. With an exclusively westerly orientation, Megalo Zastano offers good quality snow, but it is not recommended for cold winter days.

Access

To climb Megalo Zastano the most appropriate point of access is the village of Agios Athanasios to the east, with the approach made possible by the dirt road for the mountain huts, passing through Stavros place heading west.

To approach the base of the routes we follow the northwest branch of the dirt road which begins at Mousounitsiotika Livadia and which leads to the north side of the valley, opposite Skasmeni Strougka.

Climbing history

Over time Chomiriani has interested individual climbers and parties, beginning in 1970 with the establishment of the traditional route (V+, 200m) by G. Michailidis - A. Sakalis - O. Parakevas. In 1982 two new easier winter routes were added, with a maximum incline of 50ο and a height of up to 300m by Tr. Adamakopoulos - P. Matsouka (50ο, 300m) and by V. Chatzirvasanis (45ο, 200m). The exact topo of each route is not known with precision.
